GAUTENG. – Suliman Carrim appeared today in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on a charge that he allegedly failed to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry after being ordered to do so.

Lumka Mahanjana, NPA spokesperson, says Carrim is charged with a contravention of section 6(1) of the Commissions Act, Act 8 of 1947. According to the NPA he was required to appear before the commission on 14 August. Following his alleged failure to appear, a criminal case was opened and investigated by the commission's task team for recommendations. He was arrested on 15 October at OR Tambo International Airport, shortly before he allegedly was to depart on an international flight.

The state opposed Carrim's bail application. The state argued that he might evade the trial and that it would be difficult to locate him because his addresses have not yet been verified. The case was postponed to 19 October so that documents submitted by the defence could be verified and the bail application continued.
