In celebration of Mental Health Awareness Month, Pharma Dynamics is brightening the urban landscape with its latest initiative, “Give Yourself Your Flowers.” This vibrant installation aims to promote self-love and resilience while encouraging conversations about mental well-being.

Nicole Jennings, a spokesperson for Pharma Dynamics, shared the inspiration behind the installation. “We wanted to do something that would not only raise awareness about mental health, but also make people smile. Flowers have this incredible ability to brighten up spaces and lift moods, so we thought, why not use them to spread happiness and create a conversation around mental well-being? This is not just about the flowers themselves but about the emotions they represent.”

The science of flowers and emotions

The initiative is backed by scientific research illustrating the positive impact of flowers on mental health. Studies have shown that receiving flowers can increase dopamine levels, the brain chemical linked to pleasure and happiness. One extensive study found that flowers elicit strong positive emotions in individuals of all ages.

Another study revealed that flowers given to women triggered genuine smiles and that the positive effects lasted for days. A third study noted that individuals who received flowers in social settings exhibited more positive behaviours than those who received other items. The elderly also benefited from flowers, as they were found to improve mood and memory.

“Flowers have an almost magical ability to uplift and bring joy, making them the perfect medium for this installation,” said Gina Waldman, the artist behind the campaign. “We wanted to combine this natural power with the emotions that people often struggle to articulate or express. Each flower is carefully chosen to represent an emotion, and we hope that by interacting with these flowers, people will feel encouraged to connect with their own emotions and those of others.”

Symbolism and interaction

Each flower in the installation represents a specific emotion, including:

  • Poppy: Compassion
  • Iris: Empathy
  • Water Lily: Inspiration
  • Orchid: Joy
  • Apple Blossom: Support
  • Strelitzia: Freedom
  • Chamomile: Love
  • Daisy: Care
  • Orange Lily: Courage

Waldman and her team have intricately integrated these emotions into the physical structure of the flowers. The corresponding words are cut from the same material as the petals, giving each flower a personal message. Visitors are invited to “pick” an emotion or flower that resonates with them, creating an interactive and immersive experience.

“People can take selfies with the flowers, but we hope they’ll also take a moment to think about how they’re feeling. Maybe they need a little more compassion in their lives or maybe they’re looking for courage. We’ve created a space for people to reflect on that while also having fun,” Waldman explained.

A growing need for mental health awareness

The installation will feature flowers ranging from 60 cm to 80 cm in diameter, with stems of varying heights that mimic a natural garden. The tallest flowers will stand over 2 m, creating a lush garden setting where visitors can immerse themselves in oversized blooms.

Mental health awareness has become increasingly crucial in light of the global pandemic. According to global statistics, depression is projected to become the leading cause of disability worldwide. In South Africa, one in six individuals suffers from anxiety, depression, or substance-use disorder. The country also has a high suicide rate, with 23 people taking their own lives daily, and it’s estimated that for every one of these, at least ten more attempt suicide.

“These figures highlight just how important it is for us to continue advocating for mental health awareness,” Jennings added. “Through the campaign, we aim to encourage individuals to prioritize their mental health while also spreading joy. Whether it’s through engaging with the installation or sharing a flower with someone, we hope to ignite conversations that foster understanding and compassion around mental well-being.”

Join the conversation

Visitors are encouraged to share their experiences on social media using the hashtag #Bloom, making it a collective celebration of mental health awareness.

The giant flower installation will be prominently displayed at the entrance of Cape Town Station on Adderley Street from October 9 to 11. This campaign invites everyone to engage with oversized, emotion-infused blooms, reminding us that sometimes the simplest acts—like giving yourself or someone else a flower—can uplift spirits and brighten the day.

Led by Pharma Dynamics, this initiative provides a unique opportunity for the public to pause, reflect on their mental health, and engage with art in a way that uplifts and inspires. Each flower symbolises a different emotion, aiming to evoke positive feelings and encourage meaningful conversations around mental health.
