The City of Cape Town has opened its annual lifeguard recruitment drive for the coming summer season, while major upgrades continue at several public swimming pools across the metro.

The City appoints more than 600 seasonal lifeguards each year. They are deployed to designated bathing beaches and public swimming pools from late September to about mid-April. Recruitment follows the 2025/26 season, which the City says recorded the lowest number of fatal drownings in seven years.

How to apply

There are four lifeguard categories: seasonal beach lifeguard, seasonal senior beach lifeguard, seasonal pool lifeguard and seasonal senior pool lifeguard. Applicants must have the relevant qualifications, a clear criminal record with no pending cases, and must be drug free. Shortlisted candidates must pass a physical assessment.

Beach lifeguard applicants must complete a 400m swim in under eight minutes, while pool lifeguard applicants must complete a 100m swim in under two minutes, along with rescue and first aid techniques. Applications can be made at www.capetown.gov.za/lifeguards.

Pool upgrades under way

Several pools are undergoing major construction due for completion by the end of June. Work at the Delft, Lentegeur and Langa pools covers structural, civil, mechanical and reticulation upgrades. The Bellville South and Goodwood pools are receiving reticulation and mechanical plant work, while Manenberg is in the final stages of structural works. Newlands has upgraded mechanical plant and floodlights.

Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham, said lifeguards play a vital role in keeping bathers safe and that becoming a lifeguard offers young people valuable work experience while serving their communities.
