The Enyobeni inquest has returned to the spotlight after the evidence leader directed sharp criticism at the Eastern Cape Liquor Board, raising fresh questions about how the East London tavern was allowed to operate before the 2022 tragedy that killed 21 young people.

Oversight failures by the Liquor Board are being closely examined, with its role in licensing, monitoring and compliance enforcement central to the proceedings. The inquest is examining the chain of events that led to the deaths of the young patrons at the Enyobeni Tavern in Scenery Park in June 2022.

Families have repeatedly demanded answers, particularly regarding why minors were able to enter and consume alcohol at the venue. The presiding officer’s findings could trigger criminal charges, civil claims and regulatory reform within the Eastern Cape liquor sector.
