From Pasture to Prosperity: Beefmaster’s Remarkable Journey. What began in 1983 as a small family-run feedlot on a farm near Christiana has grown into one of South Africa’s leading privately owned beef businesses – with a proud legacy that spans generations and exports reaching across Southern Africa, the Middle East, and the Far East.
At the heart of the Beefmaster Group is a simple but powerful philosophy: hard work, dedication, and innovation – rooted in traditional family values. These principles, laid down by founder Lourie van Reenen, continue to drive the business today.
The van Reenen family’s relationship with beef goes back much further than 1983. In fact, it dates to 1722 when Jacob van Reenen supplied beef to ships docking at the Cape of Good Hope. This passion for producing quality meat runs in the family’s blood. In 1965, Lourie began his journey in cattle feeding, eventually founding Beefmaster on the banks of the Vaal River – a site chosen for its strategic access to water, transport routes, and opportunity.
His vision? To bridge the gap in South Africa’s meat supply while embracing all cattle breeds – a rare move in an industry often limited by preference.
Beefmaster’s commitment to innovation and excellence has been key to its growth:
- State-of-the-art Operations: From the acquisition of the Abakor facility in 2001 to the launch of a fully operational abattoir and processing plant in 2003.
- Retail Expansion: Opening its first store in 2005 and growing into several outlets across South Africa.
- Going Digital: Launching the iBeef home-delivery service in 2021 to bring top-quality meat straight to consumers’ doors.
- Global Reach: Exporting to international destinations while adhering to world-class standards, including FSSC 22000 certification for food safety.
Beefmaster doesn’t just raise cattle – it raises the bar. By combining years of hands-on experience with data-driven decision-making, the team assesses each animal’s potential based on breed, health, and condition. “We don’t discriminate against breeds,” says senior section manager Jaco van Liebenberg. “We believe any breed can produce exceptional beef.”
Beefmaster is more than a beef producer – it’s a family. Lourie’s sons, Roelie and Louw, now help steer the business, alongside a team that’s treated like kin. “We treat employees as family,” says Lourie, “and that’s why people love working for us.” With a motto like alles sal regkom (“everything will work out”), the Beefmaster Group stands as a symbol of resilience, integrity, and South African entrepreneurial spirit.
