R & J: Love Beyond the Stars is a bold, original musical brought to life by High School Jan van Riebeeck — a futuristic reimagining of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet that fuses powerful storytelling with show-stopping performances, high-tech visuals and a soundtrack that spans pop legends and Broadway hits.

From 13 to 16 April, High School Jan van Riebeeck in Kloof Street, Cape Town, invites you to a brand-new, original and futuristic musical inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. R & J: Love Beyond the Stars is a visual and musical feast – filled with emotion, rebellion and breathtaking talent.
Two lovers opposite ends of divided society
In this moving retelling of the classic tragedy, two lovers live on opposite ends of a divided society.
Remini (Remy) Montablue is a young worker from the blue class and Juliana (Jules) Capugold is a member of the elite gold class. In a society where AI sees love as an illusion and enforces strict class divisions, their love blooms against all odds. In a world of cold control and technology, it is their love that sparks the revolution.
Come alive with music
From pop and rock to Broadway, the stage comes alive with music by Lady Gaga, Chappell Roan, ABBA, Queen, Bon Jovi, Backstreet Boys and more. There are also hits from well-known musicals like Grease, The Greatest Showman, Wicked, School of Rock, Moulin Rouge!, West Side Story, The Prom, Heathers, Hadestown, & Juliet, Dear Evan Hansen, and Hamilton.
The musical is performed in English and showcases the learners’ incredible singing and dancing talent.
It uses high-tech projections, special lighting and a dynamic contrast between blue and gold to bring the world of R & J to life. It’s art, drama, and technology rolled into one. The original story was written and directed by Regina R. Malan, who is already well known for her creative flair and ability to bring out the best in young performers. This is a performance that will touch your heart.

High School Jan van Riebeeck’s drama department is one of the best in the country and a major attraction for prospective learners. The school has competed in the finals of the ATKV Teen Theatre Competition several times, often winning or placing second. Well-known actors such as Anneke Weideman (Hanna Hoekom, Die Wonderwerker), Viljé Maritz (Binnelanders, Verraaiers, Sara se Geheim), Ludwig Binge (Boland Moorde), and the sisters Lea and Trix Viviers (various productions) have all performed on this school’s stage.
