On Tuesday, 8 July 2025, the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas, together with senior Roads Infrastructure Management (RIM) officials visited Kloof Road in Clifton to assess the ongoing critical slope stabilisation work. The work is scheduled to be completed by Friday, 31 October 2025.
‘This slope stabilisation work became necessary after a section of the embankment below Nettleton Road in Clifton collapsed in July 2020. Following the collapse, temporary stabilisation measures were put in place in 2021 to ensure safety while we were preparing for the permanent work. The work involves reinforcing the slope with ground anchors, known as soil nails, along with sprayed concrete to stabilise the area. It also includes reshaping the slope and improving drainage to prevent future erosion,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
Kloof Road will remain open to traffic throughout the duration of the project. Traffic is being accommodated with minimal disruption where possible, and appropriate signage has been put in place.
‘Once stabilisation is complete, parts of the concrete surface will be finished with stone cladding to blend in with the surrounding environment. All services in the area will be restored and the roadside parking will be reconstructed with new asphalt surfacing. This project is about more than just restoring a slope. It’s about protecting public infrastructure, safeguarding nearby properties, and making this area safer for all road users. We thank the local residents for their ongoing support,’ said Councillor Quintas.
