Heelal-kompetisie bestem was, is Saterdag by die Africa Fashion International (AFI) Cape Town Fashion Week gewys.
Mia was opgewonde om die storie agter die kostuum te deel: “Countless hours of work went into these two one-of-a-kind, magnificent pieces, and I cannot wait to wear them proudly and share them with the rest of the world, as well as the story behind them!”
Wouter Hugo sê: “Mia is stunning! This national costume in my personal opinion, is a big disappointment.. She deserves much better than this..”
Enrique Redovane Martin het saamgestem: “I agree with you. Total disappointment. I created our very 1st Miss Teen Supranational 2022’s National Costume in a little time and even that had more effort in.”
That was my initial impression as well. Compared to what so many of the other countries displayed, this pales, and looks poorly made. Wouter Hugo honestly, the more I look at it, the more upsetting it gets. The design is not even flattering to her figure. It gives her a pooch that I’m sure she doesn’t have in real life. And putting a giant cross directing our attention right toward her private parts doesn’t look like a very respectable choice. The feathers don’t even stand up properly. Surely there could be a nicer, more complementary style to the dress to make it more slimming for her than less so. And the whole thing needs a lot more glimmer and “WOW” factor. It has none of that. Ugh. She deserves SO much better.”
Phumla Leleti Mbutho sê: “Beautiful Mia they did you dirty with that dress. All the anticipation for this. Our neighbours will drag us.”
Ndumiso Daluxolo Ngidi sê: “This is not a costume. It’s a dress with an extension of feathers. It doesn’t stand as an international competition costume. We need to put more efforts in our national costumes, no matter the inspiration. Costumes are dramatic and carnival ready. Remove the feathers and this becomes a cheap dress. Mia’s grace and beauty must be respected.”

Mia le Roux’s national costume was crafted in collaboration with Hollywood Costumes and Africa Fashion International- AFI through the Esther Mahlangu Foundation. It features a stunning Ndebele-inspired gown, an original artwork by Dr. Esther Mahlangu. This piece celebrates South Africa’s cultural richness and interconnectedness.
The white cloud wings, accompanying the Dr. Mahlangu gown, are crafted from feathers sourced by Cape Karoo International in Mia’s hometown of Oudtshoorn and were brought to life by Hollywood Costumes. These wings are inspired by Mia’s own journey, symbolizing her first spoken words after receiving her cochlear implant: “Look there, white clouds.” Now, her voice reaches across the world, sharing a message of hope and unity.
Mia mentions, “My national costume is a tribute to the diversity that defines my heritage. In my spirit, in my environment, and in the abundance of creativity that is being created and shared by South African artists, I resonate with the bold, colourful, and vibrant expressions that reflect our complexity.”
