WES-KAAP. – Gerrie Heyns van Snake Lives Matter op Montagu is Maandagoggend omstreeks 02:30, toe hy televisie gekyk het, deur sy kat bewus gemaak van ‘n vermeende inbreker in sy huis. Heyns het ondersoek ingestel en ‘n fisiese struweling met die verdagte gehad waartydens hy beseer is.
Die slangvanger bekryf op sosiale media hoe hy die lig aansit en die “inbreker” toe eers besef waar hy is. Die verdagte was tussen twee slanghokke met Heyns se ma se as in ‘n houtkissie in sy hande.
Heyns en die verdagte het handgemeen geraak. Met dié wat sy vrou en seun die slangkamer ingekom het, het die verdagte ‘n mes uitgepluk en vir sy maat geskree om van buite af in te kom. Vir Heyns het hy geskree: “Vir jou steek ek vrek vanaand.” Heyns het dadelik sy gesin uit die slangkamer gestoot en die deur gesluit.
Die verdagte het toe volgens sy plasing probeer om ‘n stoel deur die skuifdeur van die slangkamer te gooi, maar dit was sonder sukses. Heyns moes, gedagtig aan sy gesin se veiligheid, toesien hoe die verdagte deur die venster waar hy toegang verkry het, spore maak.
Bure het die polisie gebel, wat dadelik reageer het. Terwyl Heyns by die hospitaal was vir sy beserings het die polisie beide verdagtes in hegtenis geneem. Van Heyns se slangvanggereedskap is na bewering in een van die verdagtes se besit gevind.

At least Riëtta and Eduard is ok…
I was sitting watching tv by myself and about 2:30 this morning I saw Saartjie my one African Wild Cat coming from my snake room side in her way she reacts when there is something like another cat in our home. She was on high alert and something was freaking her out.
I immediately got up and walked to my snake room thinking maybe another cat came into our home. I switched the light on in the snake room and as I walked into the room there was a man trying to hide between my two snake enclosures. In his hand a black velvet bag that have a wooden box in that contains my mom’s ashes who recently passed away. His eyes went big and I could see he immediately realized who’s home he was in. I went blank and took him on. I threw him to the ground trying to pin him down. It was a fight and he with full force swung and hit me on the side of my head with the bag containing the wooden box. Fighting and punching I saw blood dripping down onto the floor and my shirt felt wet and warm. I thought I was stabbed and kicked him across the floor. I lifted my shirt to see if I have any stab wounds not knowing where the blood was coming from. Everything happend so quickly.
At that time Eduard and Riëtta was downstairs and basically coming into the snake room when he pulled a large knife from his back pocket. He came at me screaming “Vir jou steek ek vrek vanaand” tonight I’m stabbing you and I’m killing you! He was also screaming for his friend to come in that was outdside to come and help. My priorities changed in split seconds… now I didn’t care about him anymore but the safety of Riëtta and Eduard. He and myself only found out later that his friend took off when he saw the snake room lights go on. I pushed Eduard and Riëtta back out and pulled the glass framed door close with him trying to pull it open with the knife in hand above his head. He was armed now and wanted to kill. I managed to keep the door close, turn the key and lock the door.
He then tried to throw a chair through the sliding door to get out but because I wasn’t prepared to put my family in danger not knowing how many they are I had to watch him get out the window. Willem and Annamarie Boyder living across the street from us heard the commotion and saw the person running from our yard. Not even minutes later Montagu SAPS was at my home. Brilliant police and security companies we have here. They said I must go to the hospital first and afterwards come down for statements. While at the hospital they caught the first guy that ran. He was on the road between Montagu and Ashbury with some of Eduard’s stuff on him. They brought him to the hospital and showed us the stuff. They left and not even 20 min later they went and got the person that was in our home hiding at his home. His friend ratted him out.
While at the police station giving my statements after leaving the hospital with some stitches to my head the police brought the guy in and Riëtta and myself identified him. Riëtta recognized his face from the Clinic when she saw him in our home. They searched him and found one of my snake tools on him. No ways explaining that away.
To think you are awake and watching tv and someone still breaks into your home and enter your personal space shows you how confident they operate.
Just another night and another statistic in South Africa.

Also big thanks to Montagu SAPS and everyone from our security companies and armed response units being envolved tracking them down so quickly and everything you did.
