The City of Cape Town, in partnership with CapeBPO, is boosting the local call centre industry. The initiative, partly funded by the National Skills Fund, ensures a steady pipeline of skilled workers for high-growth sectors.
Over the past three years, the Accelerator programme has trained 2,700 Capetonians. These learners now hold accredited qualifications, making them job-ready. Many have already secured positions in the call centre industry.
Skills development and support
The training was led by CapeBPO’s Special Purpose Vehicle. Learners received a monthly stipend funded by the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape Provincial Government. Leading training providers, including the BPO Skills Academy, Ucademy, OMNI HR Consulting, and People Solutions, delivered the courses.
Graduates earned qualifications in NC: Call Centre Support NQF Level 3 and Level 4. They also received work readiness training and psychological support to boost their confidence and personal growth.
Additional training programmes
CapeBPO also runs other skills development initiatives:
- Afterschool Programme: Grade 11 and 12 students receive hands-on training and exposure to the BPO industry.
- Sunday School: Unemployed youth attend a three-week course, followed by open industry recruitment.
Cape Town: a call centre hub
Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, highlighted the City’s efforts. ‘Cape Town has become a go-to hub for international companies expanding their call centre footprint. This success comes from our strong partnerships and skills development programmes,’ he said.
The City’s commitment to upskilling workers ensures a thriving industry. As demand grows, Cape Town continues to attract investors and create job opportunities. With ongoing training and support, the local workforce is ready for the future.
