Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, has unveiled an ambitious initiative to improve cleanliness across the city. The new Main Arterial and CBD Cleansing Plan aims to enhance the city’s major routes and Central Business District (CBD) through visible cleaning efforts. This plan comes with over R26 million in start-up funding, approved by the City Council as part of the January Adjustment Budget.

The primary goal of this plan is to make Cape Town’s main highways and arterial routes cleaner. This initiative will also provide much-needed jobs through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). Dedicated teams will perform regular top-up cleaning along key routes and within the CBD, ensuring a consistent and visible impact on cleanliness.

Mayor Hill-Lewis expressed enthusiasm about the new plan, stating, “We want Cape Town to be known for its cleanliness and presentability. This initiative will leave a lasting impression on both residents and visitors, reinforcing our commitment to a cleaner city for all.”

In addition to the cleansing plan, the City is allocating an extra R100 million for pothole clearing and road resurfacing. This investment aims to ensure safer and more sustainable infrastructure, contributing to the city’s overall well-being. By prioritizing cleaner roads and improved road conditions, Cape Town sets itself apart as a city focused on growth and positive change.

The January Adjustment Budget also highlights key financial commitments:

  • R34 million for stormwater maintenance
  • R32 million for affordable rental unit repairs
  • R10 million for title deed delivery
  • R400 million in savings from improved exchange rates for wastewater treatment works
  • R10 million for CBD revitalization efforts

Through these investments, Cape Town is paving the way for a more vibrant, cleaner and more sustainable future.
