CAPE TOWN. – The National Department of Home Affairs will open an appointment-only Home Affairs office at the Civic Centre in Cape Town by the end of July 2026, after the City handed over the site for construction to begin.
The City of Cape Town says its Economic Growth Directorate, working with the Corporate Services Directorate, secured Council approval and is finalising a lease with the department for the new facility.

The office will sit on the second floor of the Civic Centre on Hertzog Boulevard in the central business district, next to the City’s cash office. To limit disruption to visitors, building work will take place after hours, over weekends and on public holidays.
Alderman Theresa Uys, Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, who officiated the handover on Friday, said the centrally located venue offered easy access for residents travelling by train, MyCiTi bus or minibus taxi. Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, said optimising City property assets unlocked long-term value for residents.
Part of the ‘Home Affairs @ home’ drive
Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber said the office formed part of the department’s “Home Affairs @ home” vision to bring services closer to people. He said its bank branch partnership had expanded to 171 branches and processed more than 182 717 Smart ID applications in under three months.
