The restoration of Paarl Hospital is nearing completion six months after a devastating fire damaged sections of the facility in January 2026, with major infrastructure repairs done and services returning to repaired areas in a phased rollout.
The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness says the project is running well ahead of the initially anticipated 12-month timeline, with key restoration work wrapped up in roughly half that time.
R67 million allocation
Western Cape Minister of Health and Wellness Mireille Wenger said the speed of the recovery reflected the commitment of healthcare teams who maintained continuity of care while the work was under way.
“When the fire broke out in January, the initial expectation was that restoration could take up to 12 months,” said Wenger. “Instead, through a tremendous effort from our teams, major restoration work has been completed in just six months and services are already returning to repaired areas of the hospital.”
The Western Cape Government allocated R67 million for the restoration. All major infrastructure work has been completed and most equipment and furniture has been delivered and installed, although some specialist medical equipment is still expected over the coming months.
Services returning by June
A number of outpatient and specialist services have already moved back into the restored sections, with the remaining specialist services expected to return by the first week of June 2026.
