Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has welcomed the classification of a provincial disaster after consecutive severe weather systems killed 11 people and caused widespread destruction across the province earlier this month.

Winde chaired a Cabinet meeting on 20 May 2026, where the response now formally shifts towards humanitarian relief, repair of critical infrastructure and the restoration of essential services. The Western Cape Government has also applied for a national disaster classification to unlock additional recovery funding.

Aerial assessments and damage scope

The Premier, accompanied by Western Cape Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning Anton Bredell and Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism Dr Ivan Meyer, conducted aerial assessments of the hardest-hit areas. The damage spans the Cape Winelands, West Coast, Garden Route, Overberg and Central Karoo districts.

The province’s combined dam levels climbed from 52.46% to 70.59% on the back of the storms, while critical water, electricity and road infrastructure was damaged across multiple municipalities. Communities remain cut off in areas where bridges and roads were washed away.

Long road to recovery

Winde said urgent funding was needed to restore essential services and rebuild affected communities. He has also raised the need for updated engineering standards and disaster planning that accounts for changing climate conditions in the province.
