The SASSA Disability Grant pays R2 400 per month from April 2026. It is available to South African adults aged 18 to 59 who are medically certified as unable to work due to a physical or mental disability. The SASSA Disability Grant exists in two forms: a temporary grant for disabilities lasting between six and 12 months, and a permanent grant for disabilities expected to last longer than 12 months.
Who qualifies for the SASSA Disability Grant
You must be between 18 and 59 years old, a South African citizen, permanent resident or recognised refugee, and living in South Africa. You must not be cared for in a state institution. You must not already be receiving another social grant for yourself. You must pass the means test and submit a medical assessment.
The SASSA Disability Grant medical assessment
A state-appointed doctor must confirm that your condition prevents you from working for at least six months. The assessment must be no older than three months at the time of application. The doctor classifies the disability as either temporary (6 to 12 months) or permanent (longer than 12 months). SASSA may also request its own medical officer review before final approval.
Documents required for the SASSA Disability Grant
- Your 13-digit bar-coded South African ID

How to apply for the SASSA Disability Grant

Processing typically takes three to five months. Once approved, your SASSA Disability Grant is paid monthly. Temporary grants must be reapplied for before they expire.
If your application is declined, you have 90 days to appeal. For appeals information, see our SASSA appeal process guide.
