SASSA Grant-in-Aid 2026: the R580 add-on payment explained

The SASSA Grant-in-Aid 2026 is a monthly add-on for beneficiaries of certain SASSA grants who are so disabled or frail that they need full-time care from another person. Following the April 2026 increase of R20, the Grant-in-Aid is now R580 per month.

Who qualifies

You may qualify for the Grant-in-Aid if you already receive one of the following SASSA grants and require full-time attendance from another person:

  • Older Persons Grant
  • Disability Grant
  • War Veterans Grant

You may not qualify if you are cared for in a state institution. A medical assessment by a doctor approved by the state is required.

How much you receive

The Grant-in-Aid is R580 per month for the 2026/27 financial year, paid alongside your primary grant.

How to apply

Apply at your nearest SASSA office. Bring your South African ID, the medical assessment report and proof of your primary grant. A SASSA officer will assist you to complete the application form. You will receive a reference number.

If your application is declined

You can appeal to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals. See our guide on the Independent Tribunal appeal.
