South Africa aviation safety has reached a new milestone, with the country securing a preliminary 95.12% score in the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) audit. The result places SA 8th globally and first on the African continent. The outcome was announced on 29 April 2026 following a Coordinated Validation Mission by independent ICAO experts.
South Africa aviation safety improves on 2023 audit
The Coordinated Validation Mission assessed South Africa’s progress since the 2023 ICAO audit, when the country recorded 91.23%. ICAO’s final detailed report is expected within 90 days. SACAA credited industry compliance and South Africa’s four-decade zero fatal accident record in the commercial airline sector.
Minister Creecy welcomes the outcome
Transport Minister Barbara Creecy said the result reflects the strength of South Africa’s regulatory systems and the collective effort to keep the country’s skies safe. SACAA Director of Civil Aviation Poppy Khoza thanked the entire aviation industry. The ranking strengthens SA’s position as the leading aviation hub on the continent.
