The proclamation was published on 8 September 2026 in the Government Gazette and was issued in terms of Section 2A of the Public Holidays Act of 1994. President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the proclamation on 4 September in Johannesburg.
The public holiday gives voters nationwide the opportunity to cast their votes as South Africans elect new councillors for municipalities across the country.
