City enforcement officers have ramped up efforts to ensure public safety during the festive season. Their vigilance has led to the confiscation of over 2,000 litres of alcohol, arrests for multiple offences and the recovery of stolen property.

Officers are going to great lengths to prevent alcohol-related incidents, inspecting car trunks, coolers, and even creative hiding spots. Some individuals have gone as far as injecting liquor into fruits like watermelons, concealing bottles in baby containers, or hiding drinks in municipal waste bins. Despite these efforts, officers remain steadfast.

“Intoxication poses serious risks, from beach fights to road dangers,” said Alderman Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security. “Officers will confiscate alcohol and issue fines. Enjoy your day responsibly and toast to an incident-free outing at home.”

On the roads, traffic officers successfully recovered two stolen vehicles and confiscated another used in a crime in Muizenberg. In one incident, officers stopped a vehicle carrying stolen champagne worth R3,000, an electronic cooler box and a Bluetooth speaker. Four suspects were arrested and face multiple charges, including possession of stolen property.

Citywide, traffic enforcement recorded over 47,000 offences, impounded 148 public transport vehicles, and executed 505 arrest warrants. Thirty-eight arrests were made, including 24 for driving under the influence. Metro Police contributed with 68 arrests and over 2,500 fines issued in the past week.

Meanwhile, law enforcement officers detained a woman caught stealing wheel caps, thanks to sharp-eyed CCTV operators. The city’s emergency services were equally busy, recording 1,862 incidents over the weekend, including 81 fires and 77 assault cases.

Residents are urged to stay alert, adhere to traffic rules, and report emergencies by calling 021 480 7700 (cellphones) or 107 (landlines).
