Online paid surveys claim to be an easy way to make money. But do they actually work for South Africans or are they just a waste of time? Many locals have tried survey platforms with mixed results—some earn small amounts, while others get frustrated by disqualifications and low payouts.

Can you really make money?

Yes, but don’t expect to get rich. Most South Africans who regularly complete surveys earn between R50 and R500 per month, depending on the platform and effort. A Cape Town student shared that she made R300 in two months through multiple sites, cashing out via PayPal.

Many South Africans struggle to earn from survey sites due to:

  • Limited availability – Some surveys are only for US or European users.
  • Disqualifications – You may spend time answering questions only to find out you don’t qualify.
  • Payment issues – Some platforms use PayPal, which not all South Africans have linked to a bank account.

One Johannesburg user reported that after a month of trying, they made only R80, which wasn’t worth the time spent.

Are surveys worth your time?

If you’re looking for quick money, paid surveys might not be the best choice. But if you have free time and patience, they can be a simple way to earn a little extra cash.
