Within the 90-day constitutional window
The date aligns with the constitutional requirement that local polls be held within 90 days of the expiry of municipal council terms, which end on 2 November 2026. Ramaphosa made the announcement in Boksburg.
Formal proclamation still pending
The date must still be formally gazetted by Cooperative Governance Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa. Once proclaimed, the IEC will close the voters’ roll and finalise the election timetable, including cut-offs for candidate nominations and special vote applications.
