How the Albany black bear rescue unfolded

Local residents alerted authorities after the black bear climbed the tree on a residential street in Albany, New York. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation responded with wildlife specialists. After observing the animal, officers fired a tranquilliser dart. As the bear was sedated, a team on the ground caught it in a net to prevent injury when it fell.

Why black bears appear in residential areas in spring

Black bears commonly move into populated areas in spring as they emerge from hibernation and search for food. Wildlife biologists say the animals are not usually aggressive and tend to avoid people. They can, however, become dangerous if cornered, frightened or protecting cubs.

What happens to the bear next

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation has confirmed it is caring for the animal and will release it back into the wild once cleared. Officials cautioned residents to keep waste secure and avoid leaving food sources exposed during the spring months.
