Toxicology results have found no traces of poison, chemicals or drugs in samples taken from victims of the suspected food-related deaths at a funeral in Ga-Maja, Mmotong wa Bogobe, Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba has confirmed.
The Premier delivered the laboratory results to the community at the Maja Tribal Council on 20 May 2026, following the death of three people and the hospitalisation of more than 100 others after attending a funeral on 18 April. Among the deceased was a seven-year-old child.
Toxicology findings
“The toxicology results received on 14 May 2026 indicate that no traces of poison, chemicals or drugs were detected in the samples that were analysed,” said Ramathuba. “At this stage, the findings therefore do not support allegations that poison was present in the specimens examined.”
A total of 123 people were treated at Polokwane, Mankweng, Dilokong and Lebowakgomo hospitals, as well as several local clinics, after community members began experiencing vomiting and diarrhoea between 18 and 20 April.
Investigation continues
Ramathuba said histology reports and additional investigations are still outstanding, and urged the community not to speculate. The provincial government has called on residents to prioritise hygiene and safe food handling at funerals, weddings, church events and other large gatherings.
