The Joe Sibanyoni arrest by the Mpumalanga Organised Crime Unit has placed the controversial businessman at the centre of a high-profile extortion case, after a Mpumalanga businessman claimed he was forced to hand over R2 million over three years.

SAPS confirmed the operation was carried out in the early hours of the morning across Gauteng and Mpumalanga, with Sibanyoni and three co-accused taken into custody simultaneously. Police said the arrests followed weeks of investigative work and intelligence gathering.
According to SAPS, it is confident in the strength of the case it intends to put before the court. The docket includes complainant testimony, financial records and other corroborating material. The accused are expected to appear in court in the coming days, with further arrests possible as the investigation continues.
