NASIONAAL. – Operasie Shanela deur die polisie wat gedurende Mei 2023 ingestel is, het tot dusver 314 728 inhegtenisnemings opgelewer.
Brig. Athlenda Mathe sê die polisie, in samewerking met die weermag, het tot op hede 290 onwettige myners in hegtenis geneem. Die onwettige mynbedrywighede is in ses provinsies, Gauteng, Mpumalanga Limpopo, Noorwes, Noord-Kaap en die Vrystaat, wat as probleemareas geïdentifiseer is, aan die gang.
Inhegtenisnemings sedert Mei 2023 is soos volg uiteengesit: Moord en poging tot moord: 1 390, verkragting: 1 252, bestuur onder die invloed van alkohol of dwelmmiddels: 1 682, ongedokumenteerde buitelandse burgers: 3 317, dwelmhandel: 575, onwettige handel in alkohol: 1 232, aanranding met die doel om ernstig te beseer: 8 001, gewone aanranding: 2 812, besit van dwelms: 3 973, en die onwettige besit van vuurwapens en ammunisie: 546.
Genl. Fannie Masemola sê die polisie bly op ‘n hoë gereedheidsgrondslag om misdaad te voorkom, te bestry en misdadigers vas te vat.
“It’s an all hands on deck approach, we are leaving nothing to chance. We thank our communities for working closely with us during this festive period to prevent crime and trace wanted criminals by sharing tip-offs. Our focus remains on serious and violent crime. Our police officers remain on the ground to ensure that we heighten visibility as it is anticipated that there will be a lot of movement on our roads. We are entering the back to school period, so we will also be ensuring that through our school safety programme, we work jointly with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) to ensure minimum incidents. We will also monitor the release of the matric results that will take place the same week as the opening of schools.”
