According to the Hawks, the case dates back to 13 March 2023 at the university’s Health and Science Faculty during the peak registration period. Sihle, who was entrusted with student registration responsibilities at the time, allegedly approached vulnerable parents and falsely claimed he could secure admission for their child.
He is accused of demanding R25 000, which was transferred into a Capitec Bank account allegedly belonging to him. Despite the payment, the student was never admitted, and the family raised the matter with the university before it was reported to the police.
Sihle was first arrested on 19 September 2024 and released on R2 000 bail. He appeared before the Mthatha Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Thursday, and the matter was postponed to 28 May 2026. He remains out on bail.
